نظرة عامة
Meera Nagji is a Specialist Optometrist at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Moorfields Eye Hospital. Meera completed her Optometry degree at Aston University before undertaking further training with Glasgow Caledonian University, qualifying as an Independent Prescriber with the College of Optometrists. She specialises in paediatric optometry and the assessment and management of children and young people with complex visual needs.
At Great Ormond Street Hospital, she works in Low Vision, Neuro-ophthalmology, Retina, Uveitis, Anterior Eye and Cataract clinics. At Moorfields Eye Hospital, Meera works within the Contact Lens, Refraction and Low Vision services.
Meera believes in taking the time to understand each child and their family, listening to their concerns and tailoring assessments and management to their individual needs.
Typically, a low vision assessment with Meera will include, as appropriate:
- Visual acuity testing and contrast sensitivity testing
- An up to date refraction of spectacles, with or without cycloplegia as required
- Time to practice and find the most useful magnifiers and visual aids for distance viewing, near tasks and any particular hobbies
- Recommendations of electronic magnifiers, apps and how to maximise AI and technology for vision impairment
- Trials of tinted glasses for light sensitivity, glare or poor contrast sensitivity
- Practical tips for everyday living
- Signposting to relevant charities and support groups
- A letter summarising visual needs and recommendations for schools or clubs with regards to adaptations that can be made to support the child
Alongside her clinical practice, Meera is actively involved in education and continuing professional development. She has supervised trainee optometrists and served as a committee member for an optical society, where she was responsible for organising learning events. She has also developed a Low Vision module for the Association of British Dispensing Opticians' Paediatric Diploma course, supporting the education of dispensing opticians working with children with visual impairment. She has also contributed to community eye-care initiatives, including volunteering with Crisis, providing eye examinations and optical support to people experiencing homelessness.
